Roger Federer may have beaten Jack Sock in a fairly routine manner in his opening ATP Finals match of 2017 but he threw in one of the worst errors of his career on his way to victory.

The Swiss completely messed up an easy forehand with the American stranded at the net, although Sock did have a slightly sneaky tactic.

When he knew Federer had a simple shot to finish off the point, the 25-year-old spun around and offered up his backside in the 19-time Grand Slam champion’s direction.

But rather than tag Sock with a powerful drive, Federer opted to try and sneak it up the line but got his shot all wrong.

After the match, Federer jokingly opened up on the moment and insists that Sock’s ‘very big’ bottom put him off.

‘It was a big distraction, I’ll tell you that, because it was very big,’ he laughed after the 6-4 7-6 (7-4) win.

‘That’s what I should have aimed for. That target was bigger than the down-the-line court that I had.

‘It’s happened sometimes in the past, but not on a big stage like this.’

Sock was pleased that his surprise tactic had worked, but insists it’s not something he plans to bring out again too often in the future.

‘I mean, I did it more for fun,’ he added.

‘Probably do it three times a year. No, it’s not a normal tactic.’
